BACKGROUND The story of Jeremiah extends the presentations on ‚ "The Exile and Return‚" (The Complete Guide to Godly Play, Volume 2, Lesson 12) and ‚"The Prophets" (The Complete Guide to Godly Play, Volume 2, Lesson 13). Jeremiah was a major prophet during the decline and fall of the southern kingdom around Jerusalem (Judah). He lived during the time of the last five kings of Judah and was called to be a prophet around 627 B.C.E. when he was about 20 years old. He felt that the word of the Lord was ‚"like a burning fire shut up in my bones'" (Jeremiah 20:9). He lived through the invasion of Nebuchadnezzar who destroyed Jerusalem.
Information on changes: Dr. Cheryl Minor writes, "This story has an image of Jerusalem on a wooden plaque that gets placed on the underlay at the end of the lesson. The storyteller is supposed to quote a large section of prophecy about the restoration of Jerusalem at this point (Jeremiah 33:6-16). To ease the burden of memorization, we wrote out the prophecy on the back of the wooden plaque."
