This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the publication of this foundational book for the practice of Godly Play. In the preface, Dr. Berryman says that the book is “about religious growth and how to foster it.” (p. ix) The “how” is deeply connected to the creative process, which becomes the focus of much of the book, connecting it to, play, the art of using religious language, and the imagination. This all leads to a theology of childhood; a way of thinking about God and children that is at the heart of Godly Play.
