Extension Lesson – Sacred Story

Volume 6-Lesson 1: The Falling Apart Includes; 2 wooden trees one with painted apples, one with painted stars, Adam-Eve figures, serpent, green felt underlay, icon w/Velcro, medium wooden tray.

The stories told in The Complete Guide to Godly PlayVolume 6 extend the core narratives in The Complete Guide to Godly Play, Volume 2, which tell how the people of God encountered the elusive presence of God. In Volume 2 we began at the beginning with the first Creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:3). Here we also begin at the beginning with a second creation story (Genesis 2:3-3:24). It tells the story of Adam-Eve and how they ‚ “fell apart” from God, from each other, from God’s creation, and from the image of God in their deep selves. We learn how these relationships were restored. This telling highlights God’s love for the creation and its creatures as well as the redemptive power of this love and its creative force. God never gives up on the People of God.

Information on changes: Dr. Cheryl Minor writes, "The revision of this lesson captures more of the biblical language of the story, including using the biblical names for the two trees in the Garden of Eden: The Tree of Knowledge and The Tree of Life. To show the difference between the two trees, the fruit on the Tree of Life was revised to look more like stars than fruit. We have also removed the hollow apple containing the differences from this presentation, since laying out the differences created problems, and the apple part of the story is not biblical, but more tradition. If you own this story, we recommend placing the apple containing the differences below the lesson as an extension material."
