St Teresa of Avila was born in what is now Spain as one of 10 Children. When she was 14 she was sent to a convent school and was ill much of her early life. When she became a Carmelite nun she helped restore the strict rule of life to the nuns, but she led them with love and good humor. She is best known for her book The Interior Castle. Like Catherine of Siena the Roman Catholic Church declared her, in 1970, one of the three women Doctors of the Church-Theresa of Lisieux is the third.
